"For to the earth planetary motions appear sometimes direct, sometimes
stationary, nay, and sometimes retrograde. But from the sun they are
always seen direct" Newton
The old astronomers watched as the planets appeared to stop and
temporarily go backwards,Copernicus recognised that this was due to
the Earth overtaking the outer planets (as in the time lapse footage
of Jupiter and Saturn above). There is no requirement for a
hypothetical observer on the Sun to account for retrogrades as we
resolve that apparent motion quite nicely once the orbitally moving
Earth is recognised and that we are moving with the orbitally moving
Earth.
The contestant on that game show is fine, this is what happens when
there are no astronomers around to explain to people what Copernicus
did and how he arrived at the conclusion that the Earth orbits the
central Sun wand how axial rotation explains the daily cycle of day
and night. How many astronomers are there here who can matter of factly
just spot what is correct from what is not and deal with the matter in
an intelligent way for although that contestant can be excused for his
lack of astronomical knowledge of heliocentricity, there can be no
excuse for people here - none !.
